New washer & dryer

When I first bought my house, I had to go out and buy a new washer and dryer. Since I've been renting for the past 20 years, I never needed one since the rentals always had them.  Well I got the regular top loader because I had heard of people having a lot of problems with their front loaders, with mildew and such.  It's a GE and during the spin cycle, it spins out of control and makes loud crazy noises like it's going to walk out of the room by itself!  That is just crazy, so I figured, the front loaders won't have that problem, so maybe I should switch these out.  These are still under warranty, so I went down this weekend and picked me out a new front loader washer and dryer.  I really don't know how to pick out this stuff, but I don't do a lot of laundry, so just need something simple.  I do a few loads of laundry every week or two.  It's just me so I don't go through a lot of clothes and towels or anything.  I got a smaller capacity washer and one that isn't digital. My mom has a digital washer and I feel like I need to be a rocket scientist to figure out how work the thing. :p

I ended up getting these by Frigidaire.  Does anyone have them or know anything about them?

Do you prefer a top loader or the front loaders?  Does anyone have any problems with their front loaders or can offer any advice before I start using them? They will be delivered here to me on Monday.

I really need to get my laundry room finished up. I want to make a little built in around these and put some drying racks on the wall above it.  I'll post more pics of the laundry room as I go.

I love getting new appliances! They look great! I don't have front loaders or your brand...we bought ours from a used appliance store five years ago and haven't had a problem !

You'll love the front-loading washer! It's so much easier on clothes than the top loader. I have several bras and tank tops that have shredded spagetti straps from getting caught on the agitator of the old top-loader.You'll love the front-loading washer! In terms of mildew, I leave the washer door open after a cycle so that the washer has a chance to dry out. I don't know if this will prove effective, but it seems like good common sense.

You only do 1-2 loads every week or so??? I do like 4 loads a week and it is just me. My top loaders are 10 years old. I don't mind them. But when it is time to get new ones I am going to get the Maytag Neptune top loaders. I guess I am old school...

Emily, yes, I've been renting since I was 19 and I'm 40 now :)

Tereas-bug, it's true, too. I don't do much laundry at all, I reuse the same towel like 3 and 4 times. Re-wear clothing if they aren't too dirty, etc.

I was in the same boat with my washer and dryer when we purchased our first home recently. We opted for some Samsung front loaders with huge capacity because we have kids and do plenty of wash a week. I don't even want to think about or quantify the loads we do. Anyway, I don't know about those particular models, but I have heard about leaving the door open a bit after a cycle to prevent the mildew thing. We have a cycle on our washer that is actually to clean out and sanitize the basin should that actually happen so I don't tend to worry about it much.

Hi there! When we built 5 years ago I bought a front load fridgedaire and have LOVED it. The dryer too. Ironically I chose them as they were the only front loaders I could afford with our building budget but I have had the most success with mine compared to others who have purchased higher end name brand models. Mildew is not a problem, but we do live in a dryer climate - but I also am pretty good about either switching to the dryer right away or running with either vinegar or bleach(whites) if I won't get to it right away. Enjoy your new machines.

I may be in the minority, but I hate the Frigidaire front-load washer we bought with our house. It's supposedly extra large capacity but hardly holds anything (every easily overloaded), it does require attention so as not to build up mildew or a bad smell, and you can't throw extra things in during the beginning of the cycle without water going everywhere. (I open the door with the item to be washed right under to catch the run-off.)

My biggest complaint is it cannot get my hubby's work clothes as clean as a top loader. (He's a logger. Filth is his middle name.) I've been told the water savings of a front-loader actually translates to not enough rince water. Even a second rince doesn't do it.

If you can maintain the washer to prevent mildew and don't have extra dirty clothes, you'll probably enjoy your washer a lot. For me, though, it's top-loader or bust.

SHUT. THE. FRONT. DOOR. I would have never in a million years said you were 40. You look young!

OK......I think front loaders are pretty. Never had personal experience with them so I cannot speak to the mildew issue. I do laundry every other day (3 of us) I can't fathom if I could take a week off. Lucky girl!!

Hi, here in the UK we generally only use front loaders. I'm not sure about humidity but I have never had a problem with mildew.

A few tips:

Run a really hot wash with some vinegar once a month to clean it out, or use a washing machine 'cleaner'.

Clean the drawer regularly, fabric softener can make it mouldy, although I use the eco one and that seems to be better.

Leave the door ajar to dry it out.

Hope this helps!

I have the front load Whirlpool duet energy saver and love it. It is quiet compared to the Maytag top load washer I had. The Maytag was always getting off balance no matter how big a load. I can get more in my front load than in the top load also. When I'm finished with my wash, I wipe the rubber ring with a cloth and also the door and leave it ajar. So far no mildew and I've had it for about 9 months.

By the way...Maytag is not what it was cracked up to be. I am slowly replacing all my Maytag appliances. Only have the dishwasher to replace now. So far it is the only one that I have not had a problem with...knock wood. LOL

I'm so glad you got your new washer and dryer. That other washer was the pitts.
