Patio Update

My Pottery Barn umbrella arrived.  I went and got a cast iron base for it at Kmart. It was on sale for like $34. compared to the one at PB for over $100.  I just hope it can hold it and not fall over.  I finished painting the table, but now have to finish up the bench. I only primed the top of it so far. I don't have a bench for the other side, so I need to buy chairs or find another bench.  I got this green chair this weekend for it, but as you can see, the seat is too low for the table. Don't you hate it when that happens?

Now I have to decide if I want to drill a hole in the picnic table to put the umbrella in it or not.  If I don't, then I won't use the umbrella near the table, I will probably just put some seating or lounge chairs around the umbrella instead.

I have a carport (click on pic to enlarge) and was thinking, maybe I could put the picnic table on my carport so if it rains or is too sunny, then I could still eat outside at the table.  I would put it right there up next to the patio so I would still have room to pull my vehicle in. It's a pretty long carport. This umbrella doesn't really shade the table unless the sun  is directly over you like between 11am and 1pm.  So the umbrella over the table almost seems to defeat the purpose, no?  Oh how I wish my patio had a cover over it.  I have to think this through and figure out what to do about all this.   I can't find any chairs or seating that I really like because I don't have a lot of places to pick from in this little town.

Do you have any ideas you could throw my way?

I have to share my first sunflower.
It bloomed!!

Cool sunflower! Looks like the Kilz primer worked woo hoo!! Yeah, unless you have a tilting umbrella it will only work for a short time. Pros on drilling a hole in the picnic table would be that it would make the umbrella more stable......con would be that it would take more work to move it to another spot. I say go for it with putting your table at the end of the carport. That way you can enjoy the shade. Good luck!!

I think setting up the umbrella with a couple chairs and table would look nice on the patio and move the picnic table to the carport.
We just put a roof on our deck and it wasn't as pricey as I thought it would be. Now I'm out there almost every night looking at my garden. LOVE it! :)

You could do a decorative paint on one small section of the concrete on your car port where your table will sit. This would distinguish between car space and entertaining space.

I just found your blog and let me just say your house is beautiful!
Love the sunflower!
I understand your chair finding dilemma..I too live in a small town and theres nowhere to look! I say put the picnic table on the carport and try it out..You can always move it back!

You may be able to find a plan here to build furniture that you can't find. I'm pretty sure she has plans for bench seats too so you could build one for the other side of the table. She plans seem VERY thorough and easy to follow. Just a thought.

The umbrella with the picnic table is beautiful! As is your sunflower. :) I know how you feel with wishing your patio had a cover over it - our umbrella doesn't shade us much either unless the sun is directly overhead. I'm thinking that after our umbrella dies or something we'll invest in one of those kind that tilts so we can block the sun more effectively. But we'll see. For now the neighbor's plants and our retaining wall block most of the sun as it goes down, so it's not too bad. Perhaps you could plant some trees or something to help block the sun? Maybe even a divider would work, too. Just some ideas!

Your little patio area is so cute, though! I love it. :)

Congrats on your first sunflower! I hope more plant life begins to grow to make the whole place more vibrant. With that said, you have a very nice patio set up there. It looks good, and that umbrella you bought makes the place perfect for a bit of lounging.
