Tackling the Deck - Part 1

I knocked down the railing on the back of my deck this past weekend. I am ready to start fixing up the outdoor area.  I love how open it is now, it doesn't feel all closed in. I have a fence around my yard, so I didn't really see the need to have this little area fenced in also.

Here is how it looked before.

In the photo below, this is looking to the left. This side faces my neighbors house and my neighbor is a little close, so I'm wanting to put up a privacy fence on this part of my deck.

In the photo below, I like how this privacy wall looks on the deck. This is sort of the goal I am trying to reach.
I wouldn't mind if the view looked out to the ocean, but I am happy with all the beautiful green lush trees towering all around me and shading me from the harsh sun and heat we've been having. :)

I also adore this little set up to sit and eat at. I had a little table and chair on my back deck when I lived in Melbourne, FL, wish I hadn't got rid of it. I may invest in a little seating area like this though, the picnic  table is too bulky so I have that back in the carport and will only pull it out when I have company over.

It doesn't look like much now, but I have a vision. I'm going to reseal the floors, maybe stain them, not sure. I might paint the new privacy fence and remaining rails white, add the bistro set and put some flowers around. Can you see the vision?

Can't wait to see what you do! I love a little bistro set. We have one and it is great for morning coffee or afternoon tea, or a beer!!!!

I agree with the privacy thing - is there a way to avoid the cost of the wall and instead maybe do some PB or Ballard's outdoor drapery fabric (it would soften the hard exterior edges)Just a thought...whatever you do will be gorgeous - love your style.

We opted to not have railing on our deck as well-it really opens it up! And we stained it this year for the first time & it made a huge difference! Here's the link it if you're interested http://thewellnesswar.blogspot.com/2011/06/outdoor-kitchenfamily-room.html -(I'm not spamming, I promise! haha) I also plan on putting up a lattice wall for privacy & plan on growing ivy & climbing plants to make it green & pretty. Can't wait to see what you do!

Thanks Tina, I just went and looked at your blog and it really does look great stained. I am still considering staining mine. I like the lights, too, I also have bought lights for my deck that look like that but wasn't sure how I was going to hang them. Love the way you put those little posts up, I may steal that idea!

Your outdoor deck doesn’t look bad. I think it just needed a makeover, so it will look more inviting. Well, staining your wooden deck was a great idea. I hope that you pushed through the plans of doing so. That's what I did with my deck too, and I like the outcome because it looked like sparkling new. My guests also thought that I replaced the wooden surface with a new one. Staining was the secret. :)
