Mount Airy, NC is the birthplace of Andy Griffith. The fictitious town Mayberry on the Andy Griffith show was based on this town. It has all the southern charm you can imagine. The people here are really friendly and will just stop and chat with you on the street. There are lots of festivals down town throughout the year and a quaint little shopping district all up along Main Street.
The town was incorporated in 1885. The population is really small, somewhere around 9000. There is never any rush hour traffic and people take their time here. This area is also known for it's vineyards. The town is surrounded by the beautiful Blueridge mountains. I lived in Mount Airy for about 3 years and it was a great experience.

The reason I picked the ones above is because I like to eat somewhat healthy and a healthy restaurant can be hard to find in a small town. I will admit that a lot of places around town are grease joints. I know there are some more popular ones with the locals, but the above so far are my favorites.
Dessert!
For my favorite (non-healthy) place to go,
it's hands down the best in town,
Miss Angels Heavenly Pies

Scoops Ice Cream
is also the place to go in the summer.
(They are closed during the colder months.)
It's a little ice cream vendor you will find when leaving Mount Airy and heading towards Virginia on Hwy 89.
He just set up shop right there at his house off the side of the road, he didn't realize how popular it would become. Their 1 scoop cone looks like 3 scoops!!!

Hey Jolie! I'm one of your silent followers (i.e. I never comment, found you through a link from another blog and started following and look forward to seeing/reading about your many projects!)...anyway,
my cousin, Chip Pulliam, also lives in Mt Airy and it's one of my favorite places in NC. I'm looking forward to seeing your photos in and around town!
Hi Carol Ann! That is neat your cousin is here. It's such a small town! Sometimes it seems like a lot more people live here, but that's because people from the outskirts come to town to do their shopping and things here.
I'll try to post a lot more photos around town as I continue to take pictures. There are so many things I want to go see and do that I haven't even had a chance to do yet.
Hey, I live if Pfafftown, NC not too far from Mt Airy!!
